36 years ago, physicist Lorne Whitehead discovered that a single domino can knock down a second domino up to 50% larger than the first. According to Whitehead, if you started with a domino that’s 2 inches tall, by the 8th domino you will have knocked down a 3 ft domino. Keep going down the line in that order and the 31st domino will be approx. 3,000 ft taller than the peak of Mt. Everest.

So, why are we telling you all this? The reason is that if you apply this concept to your personal / professional / social life, it creates a strategic path to reach your goals. It’s the path to the big-picture goals that make you wonder, “Where the hell do I even start?”

Setting your dominoes

Let’s say you have a goal to run the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon next year. Here’s the breakdown:

  • 1-year goal | Finish the Indy Marathon
  • 6-month goal | Endurance training 5 days/week
  • 1-month goal | Find a running partner for added motivation
  • 1-week goal | Purchase necessary equipment (running shoes, clothes, etc.)
  • Today | Register for the race

By using the domino method, we’ve essentially drawn a map that details every stop toward the “destination” of a completing the marathon.

This strategy can make any goal seem within reach and not so intimidating. In theory, running 26.2 miles on a cold, November morning sounds impossible. But now that we’ve lined up the dominoes correctly, the only way to fail is by not following the path.

Whether your goal is to add a certain number of new properties to your portfolio next year, read a certain number of books this fall, or take a vacation to Europe, line up your dominoes and knock those bad boys over!
